SOME TOURIST ATTRACTION SITES IN LAGOS

The city of Lagos, Nigeria is the place to be. There are too many tourist attractions in Lagos – from the Island, Mainland, Epe,  Badagry, Apapa, Ikeja, Sango etc. But I’ll post a few for now. What makes Lagos thick – and the places you need to visit, when next you’re in Lagos include the followings:

National Museum, Lagos

The National Museum Lagos is now over fifty years old, having been established just before Nigeria achieved full independence from the United Kingdom in 1960. It has one of the most significant collections of West African antiquities in the world. Lord Cultural Resources was asked by the Ford Foundation to facilitate a retreat for the National Museum to identify the vision for a revitalized museum in terms of its role and impact in Nigeria, West Africa and the world at large.

National Arts, Theatre

Built and commissioned in 1977, this edifice is one of Nigeria’s most culturally significant entertainment spots. The theatre although not well managed is however a beauty to behold, with its many rooms and halls as well as spacious and serene environment, this place is ideal for weekend visits and public holiday relaxation. The national arts theatre is located in Iganmu, Lagos .

Palms Shopping Mall

The palms shopping mall is by far the most sophisticated shopping center in Lagos, Nigeria with world class facilities, shops and malls that could leave you gasping for breath. I respect the luxury and neatness of this place. Of course just like the Silverbird galleria, the Palms center has cinemas and other lifestyle shops but it is by far a classy place in a world of its own. Virtually anything under the sun can be bought here.

Silverbird Cinema and Galleria

The Silverbird Galleria is a one stop shopping center with many modern shopping facilities. It is a relaxation center with the very best of entertainment and lifestyle services on offer. For instance one of Nigeria’s leading cinema companies, the silverbird cinemas is located in the multipurpose building. It has a very large space on the ground floor on which various events hold on a day to day basis such as dance competitions, parties and other forms of amusement. There are other notable activities you could find at this place such as bowling, bookstores, boutiques and a host of others. Of course the quality of service at this place is world class. The Silverbird galleria can be found at Ahmadu Bello way in Victoria Island.

Lekki Conservation center, Lagos, Nigeria
Run by the Nigerian Conservation Foundation, this centre has a huge tract of wetlands set aside for wildlife viewing. Raised walkways enable you to see monkeys, crocodiles and various birds; early morning is the best time to visit, it also has a library there.

Elegushi Beach

Elegushi is located off Lekki expressway. people heavily patronize this spot. Elegushi offers a mix of music, food and beautiful scenery of the water There are also different shacks (some of which turn to clubs at night) scattered along the beach. There’s a 1k gate fee/person and #200 parking fee/car. I’ve heard the best time to visit is Sunday night from 10pm.

Oniru Beach

This beach is a quiet spot where families or friends can go and relax against the backdrop of the musical rumble of the sea waves hitting the sandy shore. For a token gate fee of just N1000, Oniru Private Beach is located at Victoria Island, Lagos. Oniru Private Beach has a decent, clean environment and lush white sand that is yet to be ravaged by buffeting ocean surge, this “beach doctor” injects peace into your tensed muscles and calms your nerves. That is not all, there are individual bar shacks offering assorted drinks and grilled spiced food while you get massaged by the sea breeze. Horse rides are also offered for a pocket-friendly fee.

Takwa Bay

This is an exclusive beach and located across the harbor of Lagos and can be accessed by boat. This is one beach in Lagos where swimming is not discouraged. Swimming is popular here because the water is quiet. Surfing and water skiing are also available. Rental tents and chairs are available for tourists to Takwa Bay. The serenity is complete with breezes that blow through the harbor.

Ilashe Beach

Also known as Lagos millionaires’ playground. Ilashe has the signature of Lagos beaches: white, lush sandy shores, coconut orchards just behind the beaches and all breath-taking view of the sea. From there, one could view houses along the sea line and tens of ocean vessels as they berth on the high sea waiting for their turn to come into the Lagos wharf.
Outside these, one of the biggest attractions to Ilashe is high level of privacy it has. It has not yet been overrun by urchins. To get to Ilashe, we took off from the Lagos Boat Club waterfront on an 84-seater boat, one of the boats recently introduced on Lagos water. This kind of ferry boat is suitable for those who have water phobia. It is more balanced on water and hardly bops up and down unlike the speedboat; but it is not as fast as a speedboat.
